Today’s episode with Henry & Eric from Zentral looks at what this means in practice and how modern code management tools common in GitOps and infrastructure as code are helping shape an emerging modern device management approach.

We had a lovely conversation with Bob Gendler, Steve Yuroff, and Tim Pearson about home automation and specifically HomeKit and the Home App in a previous episode, but we didn’t get to everything. So we decided to have a second one! In this episode we’ll get more into onboarding of devices, Siri voice control, security, automation, and troubleshooting.

The job of a MacAdmin is a global affair. We’ve done episodes with guests in a number of countries, but wanted to focus on what it’s like in a nation with over 1.4 billion people that’s projected to be the most populous country in the near future.

Many of our listeners will have set up AppleTVs at work. Some might use device management tools to configure one or more AppleTVs in ways that allow them to be used in corporate or education environments. We’ll talk through the nuance of AppleTV management in this episode, with Collin Elliot.

Vision Pro could be the next big Apple product to change the way humans interact with computing devices. In this episode, we’ll look at some of the SDKs, sensors, and other technologies that have been in the making for a decade that make this technology possible. We’ll explore successes and failures of competing platforms, and think a little about the Vision Pro in the sense of device management, support, and what we might do with them in offices, which shapes how we might manage and support them. Bryson Tyrrell and Rich Trouton join us to talk through what we want, what we think we’ll get, and how we’ll respond to the ever-changing technology landscape.

A lot of organizations want to treat device management like we treat code. Check in changes, get a second party to approve the check in, and the change goes live. That second set of eyes on a change provides a proactive approach to the security of changes made. It also helps mitigate small mistakes that can have a substantial impact on how users interact with their technology. We can then string together a collection of workflows to pipeline facts about devices to a SEIM or trigger events in other solutions. This usually involves agents. Yet we need to bootstrap devices into these types of systems, and that means MDM. In today's episode, we’ll discuss these types of workflows with Mike McNeil and JD Strong, from FleetDM.

Early in the podcast, there were plenty of stories of MacAdmins who had contentious relationships with security teams. We hear less and less of that every year. It still happens, but far less. We’ve had guests on to tell us how platform teams can work with infosec, but today we’re joined by a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) to give some tips coming from the other direction.

It’s that time of the year again, when Apple drops mad-crazy-awesome-sauce updates on us. We’re used to iterative updates that make our lives better. This year we also have new products to manage. No word on whether there will be any management of Vision OS - but we’ll soon be managing Apple Watches. Because see, these are all computers - just like the Vision Pro. In today’s episode we’ll spend far more time talking about hardware, software, and management options. But in the meantime, let’s remind everyone that We often see the first release of Apple products as a bit less than. They can come in more expensive than other products in a given category. Like the iPhone and iPod, it will endure its share of ridicule for its high price and derivative functionality, people will complain about its design and point out its deficiencies. But in a year or five, the rest of the world will catch up to Apple’s vision.

Every organization has a set of norms they follow. Within those are processes that people go through routinely - and those aren’t often documented at new organizations (be they orgs within other orgs or new companies). There have been systems like Six Sigma for tracking those processes, but like how neurons know what paths to take - those are only one part of the brain. EOS is one of those business operating systems, like the OS of the brain, that is more comprehensive than just processes, but goes far deeper into an org. Today we’re speaking with Lucas Acosta from Foojee about EOS and how that has helped Foojee

Lingon has been a part of the MacAdmins toolkit for as long as recent memory caused us to make launch items. Sandkorn became useful around the same time that we had to start looking at application sandboxes. In today’s episode, we interview the person behind these: Peter Borg

MacAdmins have to manage all kinds of things. We talk a lot about settings and features when it comes to device management. But fonts are one of those things that can be important and in fact a security issue as well. For example, if a drug company uses the wrong font they could face massive penalties from regulators. Employees might send out materials with unlicensed fonts. In today’s episode we’ll talk about what’s involved in font management: how to get the right fonts on the right devices and build sustainable workflows so teams can have access to such an important aspect of computing.

The world of open source MDMs continues to evolve. We’ve had guests on to talk about open source mdm tools in the past but this is one of those episode topics that should come back up routinely. Especially when we see larger scale operations. Today we’ll talk about how NanoMDM could be used to build a dynamic and flexible event-based mdm platform. This type of system is broadly useful to multiple different types of orgs and can have great security benefits.

Today, let’s talk about integrations. Most software companies these days want to be a “platform”. Part of that play is to build APIs, document them, and facilitate other companies building integrations as well. But many of us have unique workflows and so have to build our own. In this episode we’ll think about building our own integrations with various tools (e.g. LogicMonitor), and some things to consider when doing so.

“Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.” - Plato
There are so many different ways to learn about the MacAdmin field. One that we haven’t covered on the pod is the Lynda.com (now LinkedIn) courses that date back to the era of Mac OS X Server. Today, we’ll hear from its creator Sean Collins about his courses, how the industry has evolved, how being considered an industry “expert” helps with building consulting business, and even a little about his upcoming book called “Technically Fit”.
